USA Today selected Pickerington as its national champion in 1999 and Butcher as its coach of the year. The newspaper placed Pickerington in its Super 25 national rankings for 10 straight years. Butcher’s teams were ranked No. 1 in Ohio by the Associated Press nine consecutive years. Pickerington won 74 consecutive games during the 1991-92 and 1993-94 seasons and had a 181-game win streak in its league, beginning in 1987. Over 25 years, Butcher’s teams averaged 23.3 victories and 2.5 losses, going undefeated in 1984-85 and 1992-93. Five of his players were named Player of the Year in Ohio and more than 50 went on to play Division I college basketball.
