From John Glenn High School in New Concord, Ohio, Jay Burson was a scoring and assist machine. His state record as the all-time scoring leader still stands at 2,958 points and over 530 career assists. He was Player of the Year as a junior and senior and first team All-Ohio for three years. He had a career average of 33 points per game and reached double figures in 89 of 90 career games. At 6 foot and 160 pounds was he big enough and strong enough to play in the Big Ten for Ohio State University? You bet! Jay started in 95 of 122 games scoring 1,756 points, 14.4 points per game with 329 assists and 204 steals (career steals leader for OSU). In 1988 he scored 38 points vs. Oklahoma. For his career he shot 50% from the field, 40% from three point range and 82% from the line. In 1989, his free throw percentage was .867, the third highest for a single season. He was All Big Ten in 1989, team MVP in 1988 and 1989 and captain his senior year.
