Phil Hubbard was Ohio ’s player of the year in 1975 at McKinley High School in Canton. He scored 1,400 points and collected 900 rebounds in three seasons at the University of Michigan. Hubbard led the Wolverines to 25 victories and the NCAA championship game as a freshman in 1976 and played on the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic team in Montreal the same year. He was an All-American in 1977 when he led the Wolverines (26-4) to the Big Ten championship. Hubbard averaged 19.5 points and collected a school-record 389 rebounds. He missed junior year after injuring his knee in the World University Games, but had a solid senior year. Hubbard was one of four Michigan players to have his number (35) retired. He averaged 10.9 points during a 10-year NBA career with Detroit and Cleveland.
