Steve Thomas is considered one of the finest players in Xavier University history. He made several All-America teams as a junior in 1964 after averaging 30 points for the 1963-64 Musketeers. The ambidextrous guard from Roger Bacon High School had an unorthodox style in that he took right-handed shots off his right foot instead of the left. He could shoot free throws successfully with either hand. Thomas scored a school-record 50 points against Detroit on Jan. 6, 1964, and followed it up less than two months later by scoring 45 points against the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. During that game, he scored just less than half of Xavier’s total output (92 points). Playing only 73 games because he blew out his knee 17 games into his senior year, he scored 1,722 points for a career average of 23.6.
