Sam Lickliter began officiating high school basketball in western Ohio shortly after graduating from college in 1968 and liked it so much that he wore the striped shirt and carried a whistle for 36 years. While working as a teacher and a school administrator, he officiated at night and on the weekends and earned so much respect that he was assigned to regional competition in his seventh season and the state tournament in his ninth year. While working high school games, he got his first major college assignments in 1977 and eventually dedicated himself to NCAA Division I men’s basketball. He officiated at 15 NCAA Tournaments, drawing five Regional assignments and one Final Four. He was on the Mid-American Conference roster for 29 years and the Big Ten for 22 seasons. After retiring in 2005, he became supervisor of officials for the Mid-American Conference and the Summit League.
