Robin Hagen-Smith became the head coach of its women’s basketball team in 1983, when Shawnee State University was a community college. She knew what she was getting into because she had attended the school in Portsmouth for two years (1979-81) before transferring to the University of Rio Grande. After playing brilliantly for two seasons at Rio Grande, Hagen-Smith was hired as Shawnee State’s coach at the tender age of 22. Her team had a five-year, 76-52 record in 1988 when Shawnee State transitioned into a four-year school competing in the NAIA. Over the next 21 years her teams built a 535-128 record (.806 winning percentage), won 10 conference championships and an NAIA Division II national championship in 1999. Hagen-Smith has been named American Mideast Conference coach of the year seven times. Rio Grande, Shawnee State and her hometown of South Webster have placed Hagen-Smith in their halls of fame.
