The rebirth of women’s basketball in Ohio had just begun when Amy Tucker averaged 30.2 points and 11 rebounds for Springboro High School in 1977-78, carrying the Panthers to the Class AA final of the third state tournament. In spite of Tucker’s 36 points in the championship game, her unbeaten team lost a two-point decision. A Parade Magazine All-America selection, Amy Tucker was named Ohio Player of the Year and received a scholarship to Ohio State University. With the Buckeyes she was just as impressive. They had a 72-51 record during her career, and she finished as the school’s No. 2 all-time scorer with 1,629 points. As a senior she led OSU to the Big Ten Tournament title and a trip to the first Women’s NCAA Championship. Since then, Tucker has earned a strong reputation as a recruiter and Associate Head Coach at Stanford University. In 1995-96, with Tucker serving as Interim Head Coach while Head Coach Tara VanDerveer was leading the U.S. Olympic squad, Stanford went 18-0 in the Pac-10 Conference and reached the Final Four. During her career at Stanford, which began with the 1986-87 season, her teams have won 20 Pac-10 Titles, have been to the Final Four ten times, and won the National Championship twice, both in 1990 and 1992.
