When Don Callan retired as Cedarville University’s basketball coach in 1995 after serving in that capacity for 35 years, he was the NAIA’s third winningest active coach and ranked 19th all-time with 578 victories. His teams won four Mid-Ohio Conference championships and were NCAA national runners-up in 1988 and 1990. The Yellow Jackets won three NCAA Midwest Region titles. Don Callan finished his career with eight straight 20-victory seasons and a .577 winning percentage. Callan was the school’s athletic director from 1961 to 1998, and presided over an increase in varsity programs from two to 14. He was such an institution at Cedarville that in 2003 its athletic center was renamed the Callan Athletic Center. He was inducted in the school’s hall of fame as well as those of the NAIA, NCCAA and his alma mater, Taylor University. In keeping with his 50-year commitment to worldwide sports evangelism, he founded the Missions Involvement Service at Cedarville.
