Bud Olsen was a 6-foot-8 center with remarkable outside shooting ability for a man his size. He earned All-City honors at Belmont High School in 1957 and 1958 and All-Ohio in 1958. He scored a City League-record 43 points against Germantown in his junior year and averaged 23.4 points as a senior before enrolling at the University of Louisville where he was a three-year letterman. He scored 1,192 points and grabbed 761 rebounds for Louisville teams that had a combined record of 51-29. In 1961-62, he averaged 20.8 points as the Cardinals reached the NCAA Regional semifinals where they lost a one-point decision to national runner-up Ohio State. He was the team’s captain and most valuable player.  Olsen was selected by the Cincinnati Royals of the National Basketball Association and played for six teams in seven seasons of professional basketball. He averaged 7.5 points for Cincinnati in 1964-65. Bud Olsen was inducted in the Louisville Hall of Fame, and his No. 13 jersey has been retired.
