It took Jerry Scheve awhile to settle into his profession, but he always knew that coaching basketball would be part of his life.
“I coached my first team when I was 16 years old,” Scheve said. “I got out of college I started coaching again. As I was trying to find a career, I knew the only thing I really enjoyed was coaching basketball.”
Scheve landed the job of coaching the Wilmington College women’s team in 1990, and his enthusiasm has been rewarded with great success. His teams have won more than 400 games in 22 seasons at Wilmington. The Lady Quakers teams have won eight regular season and seven conference tournament titles during his tenure.
The highlight was an NCAA Division III national championship in 2004 when Wilmington won nine consecutive tournament games after finishing the regular season with an 18-6 record. In recognition of that, he was named national coach of the year.
The championship season was preceded by three NCAA Tournament appearances that included trips to the Elite Eight and Sweet 16 in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Wilmington returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and 2008.
