Few college basketball players benefited more from the introduction of the 3-point field goal in 1986-87 than Dave Jamerson of Ohio University.
Jamerson, a long-range sniper who would make 41.9 percent of his 3-point attempts in his career, had to sit out that 1986-87 season with a knee injury, but he made good use of the 3-point goal in his last three varsity years. He scored 519 points in 1987-88, 551 in 1988-89, and 874 in 1989-90, finishing his career with an OU-record 2,336 points.
The 6-foot-5 shooting guard/small forward collected 239 three-point baskets, including 131 in his senior year when he averaged a school-record 31.2 points per game and was named Mid-American Conference player of the year. He sank an NCAA-record 14 three-point shots while scoring 60 points against the College of Charleston.
In 1990 Dave Jamerson became the first Ohio University player selected in the first round of the National Basketball Association draft. He was taken 15th overall by Miami and was immediately traded to Houston where he played two seasons. He had brief stints with Utah and New Jersey in 1993-94.
