After a sparkling career at Mansfield Senior High School where she averaged 20 points per game, Joy Holmes blossomed at Purdue University.
In four years (1988-91) at the school in West Lafayette, Indiana, she set 11 Boilermaker records, including the career mark of 1,747 points. She averaged 14.7 points and 6.2 rebounds. She set records for single season points (624) and career steals (323).
As a senior Holmes averaged 21.5 points and 9.2 rebounds as Purdue won the Big Ten championship with a 17-1 record and finished with a 26-3 mark, losing in the second round of the NCAA Championship.
Holmes not only was named Big Ten Conference Player of the Year but she was selected for the Kodak All-America team. She also was chosen as Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year and Purdue's Female Athlete of the Decade.
Holmes played professionally in Japan before joining the Seattle Reign (1997-98) and the Nashville Noise (1998-99) of the ABL and the Detroit Shock (2000) of the WNBA.
