As a freshman, Deb Elwer attended the first girls state high school tournament in Columbus with some of her Delphos St. John's High School teammates.  “I remember looking at the other girls and saying quietly, “One day the four of us are going to be playing on that floor,” Elwer said. The Delphos girls didn't just play on that court one day, they played on it six days over the next three years, taken there by their coach and 2010 OBHOF Inductee Fran Voll. Deb Elwer was known as “Miss Clutch” at Delphos St. John's. She led the girls basketball team to a 74-1 record and three straight trips to the state tournament. The 5-foot-10 forward was UPI Ohio Class AA Player of the Year in 1978 and 1979. The Bluejays won the Class A championship in 1977 with a 61-40 victory over Mansfield St. Peter and the Class AA title in 1979 by beating Bishop Hartley of Columbus, 57-53. Their only loss was to Springboro in a 1978 Class AA semifinal. Elwer, who averaged 17.1 points as a junior and 17.2 as a senior, received a full scholarship to Northern Kentucky University. The Delphos St. John's state championship teams were inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.
