Bonnie Beachy, a standout basketball player from Struthers High School (1978) and Kent State University (1982), left an indelible mark on Ohio basketball.
At Struthers High School, Beachy led her team to the 1978 State AAA Championship and was named State MVP and AP Player of the Year. She earned selections to both the AP and UPI All-Ohio First Teams in 1978. As the career leading scorer, Beachy demonstrated her athletic versatility by earning 11 varsity letters across basketball, tennis, and track & field.
Beachy's success continued at Kent State University, where she set 23 records and became the all-time leading scorer for both men's and women's programs. Her collegiate career culminated in an NCAA tournament appearance in 1982. In recognition of her achievements, Kent State retired her #13 jersey. Beachy's athletic prowess extended beyond basketball, as she earned a total of 7 varsity letters - 4 in basketball and 3 in tennis.
Her career records at Kent State include 2,071 points (1st all-time), 17.1 points per game (2nd all-time), 908 field goals made (1st all-time), 51% field goal percentage (3rd all-time), 823 rebounds (4th all-time), and 303 steals (3rd all-time).
In 1988, Beachy was inducted into both the Struthers High School Hall of Fame and the Kent State Varsity "K" Hall of Fame.
Following her athletic career, Beachy dedicated herself to education, working with at-risk children before advancing to the role of middle school principal.
Bonnie Beachy passed away on October 13, 2017, at age 57, after a 12-year battle with ovarian cancer.
