Tay Baker graduated from Hamilton High School in 1945 and went on to attend the University of Cincinnati. His college education was interrupted when he served 18 months in the Army during his first year at UC.
After completing his education, Baker began his coaching career at the high school level, leading basketball programs at Lebanon, Wyoming, and Miamisburg high schools. These early experiences helped build the foundation for his future collegiate coaching career.
Baker's collegiate coaching journey began at the University of Cincinnati, where he first served as an assistant coach for five years. When promoted to head coach, he made an immediate impact, winning the Missouri Valley Championship title in his first season. During his seven-year tenure as head coach at UC (1965-1972), Baker accumulated an impressive record of 125-60, maintaining a winning percentage of .676.
In 1971-72, Baker transitioned to Xavier University as head coach. His impact at Xavier was significant - in his third year, he led the team to their first winning season in 12 years. One of the highlights of his Xavier career came during his final season, when his team achieved remarkable victories over nationally ranked opponents, defeating both #12 ranked Southern California and Tennessee to win the Volunteer Classic.
As of 2024, Baker continues to be a living legend in Cincinnati basketball history. He celebrated his 97th birthday on September 24, 2024, representing one of the elder statesmen of Cincinnati basketball coaching.
His career is marked by consistent success at multiple levels of basketball, from high school through major college programs, and his influence on basketball in the Cincinnati area spans several decades.
