The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame mourns the passing of Ellen Lawrence, a pioneering force in Ohio girls' basketball and athletics.
Ellen's remarkable 27-year career at Shelby High School included establishing the school's first girls' sports programs in 1973. As head basketball coach for 23 years, she compiled an impressive 338-147 record, highlighted by winning the 1983 OHSAA State Championship and finishing as state runner-up in 1992.
Beyond the court, Ellen was passionate about music, golf, tennis, movies, and motorcycling. She was an active member of several organizations, including the Ohio Education Association and Chelle's Angels women's riding club.
Ellen will be formally inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame on April 12, 2025. We are grateful she was able to receive her award before her passing.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 29, 2025, from 1-4pm at Shelby High School in The Commons, where friends and family will gather to share memories.
Her legacy lives on through the countless young women she mentored and the pathways she created for female athletes across Ohio.
