Garry Roggenburk

After an outstanding basketball career at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Garry Roggenburk became a star basketball player at the University of Dayton. A 6-foot-6 forward who seemed to glide effortlessly on the court, Roggenburk collected 1,398 points and 1,027 rebounds in a three-year varsity career. In a 1960 game against Miami of Ohio, he grabbed 32 rebounds for a record that still stands. He led the Flyers in scoring all three years, averaging 16 points in each season. He was the team’s leading rebounder in 1959-60 and 1960-61, averaging 13.8 and 12.5. He was co-captain of the 1962 team that gave Dayton its first National Invitation Tournament championship. He was inducted in UD’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1971 and was named to the school’s 20-man All-Century Team in 2004. Drafted by the NBA’s Philadelphia Warriors in 1962, Roggenburk chose to sign a baseball contract instead. A left-hander, Garry Roggenburk pitched for the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox and Seattle Pilots in a nine-year career.
